Upon leaving your house, even if only for a few minutes, always lock the door behind you. Do not simply pull it shut.
If you do have an intruder alarm fitted always arm the alarm, even if going out for a short time. Keep in mind that if somebody is studying you and your house for a potential break in, your behaviour will be noticed and a possible theft can be deterred.
